The center focused on applying the theories, technologies and methods of systematic botany, ecology, molecular biology and plant domestication to study on phylogeny and phylogenetic reconstruction of some important plant groups, genetic basis of plant diversity, speciation mechanism and distribution pattern, stress resistance mechanism and conservation biology of rare and endangered species, and adaptive evolution of essential functional genes in important species. Furthermore, use genetic engineering to develop germplasm innovation.

1 Collection of the medicinal and ornamental plants distributed in East China on the basis of wild investigation; conservation research in selective key areas and ex-situ conservation on key species; establishment of well-managed germplasm garden and conservation database, and revise of local records
2 Construction of adaptive and powerful protection based on plant taxonomy, physiology, biochemistry, ecology and other methods; reveal of the mechanism and distribution pattern of key species in East China; exploration of the physiology and defense response for rare species under stress, and supply of the theoretical basis for exploiting plant resource.
3 Conservation research on key plant groups in combination with wild breeding and pollination systems research, investigation on genetic, reproductive, ecological basis involved in species formation, propagation obstacles causing endangerment, and supply of the theories and methods on the expansion and development of wild population.
4 Investigate formation basis including genetic structure, variation and adaptive evolution and the molecular level of biological diversity and protection strategies of the key species in East China by molecular biology techniques, from perspectives of species diversity, genetic diversity, ecological diversity; Development of new significant and functional genes from medicinal plants, ornamental plants and other economic plants, and exploration of molecular identification technology system for regional differentiation on the basis of genetic diversity.
5 Normal and advanced breeding of medicinal, ornamental and other economic plants by introduction and acclimatization, systematic breeding, genetic engineering, space mutation breeding and so on, supply of excellent and innovative varieties for the development of agriculture and forestry, medicine and landscaping in Jiangsu province through the establishment and demonstration of the breeding base and promotion center.
