The center was established in 2007, grown from the former Department of Plant Introduction and Acclimatization.
The center mainly focus on the research involving the introduction and acclimatization of wild and landscape plants, the culture technology of landscape plants, the relationship between plant resources and environment, the planning and management of plants, the application of plant diversity in the environmental design, by using the theory and method of botany, pedology, ecology and horticulture.
The aim is to provide measures for solving the vital ecological and environmental problems in the reconstruction of urban and rural areas in Jiangsu province as well as in Eastern China, and then sustainably meet the needs of plant diversity for improving environmental quality, landscape aesthetic, ecological harmony, and environmental protection during the social development and economic construction.

The center owns 5 research groups including:
1. Improvement and hybridization breeding of Taxodium;
2. Cultivation of stress-tolerant plant resources;
3. Ecological engineering;
4. Design and planning on landscape including high plantation, river, public green space and residential area;
5. Research and extension of landscape plants. The center is equipped with 0.5 ha experimental nursery, 200 m2 green house, and 200 m2 cutting bed. There are 27 staff members including 7 senior researchers，8 middle researchers and 12 postgraduate students. Since 1996, the center has conducted more than 35 research programs granted by national and provincial and municipal governments, and gained 1 national invention patent, 6 national and 4 provincial certificated tree varieties respectively as well as 52 published papers.
