The center was established in December 2000 as one of Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratories. It is orientated towards the medicinal plant resources development mainly in East China which served for the development of medicine, animal medicine and pesticide in Jiangsu Province. Disciplines studied include plant taxonomy, plant genetics, plant physiology, plant cultivation and medicinal plant chemistry, and so on.
The center has 25 researchers, of which 19 with master degree or above, 8 of them have doctoral degrees. At present, 52 postgraduate and 8 Ph.D. students study in the center.
The center now has Molecular Biology Laboratory of Medicinal Plant, Medicinal Plant Germplasm Improvement and Cultivation Laboratory, Medicinal Plant Resource Chemistry Laboratory, Extraction Laboratory and Intermediate Test Laboratory, as well as more than 100 sets of large equipments.
In recent years, 19 research projects have been undertaken by the center, more than 280 research papers and 18 monographs have been published, among which 35 papers have been quoted by SCI; 5 research projects have been awarded by National Department of Science and Technology and Jiangsu provincial government.
Besides, 15 patents have been authorized, Chinese herbal medicines GAP Web site has been established and opened to public.

1. Taxonomy and systematic evolution of medicinal plants;
2. Conservation and utilization of medicinal plant germplasm, mainly including collection, evaluation, genetically improvement, propagation and utilization of medicinal plant germplasm resources;
3. Separation and purification of the active ingredients of medicinal plants, structural identification of medicinal plants, lead compounds optimization, study on the biological activity, research on pre-clinical drug in accordance with evaluation requirements of new drug;
4. Separation and clone of the functional genes of medicinal plants, including gene clone of the key synthesis enzymes of important active ingredients from medicinal plants, gene functional analysis, molecular modification and transgenic research.
