The lab was established in 1992. Based on plant diversity and conservation biology, the main task is not only to study on the theory and technology of ex situ conservation of endangered plants but to explore the new and useful plants, which provide the important plant germplasm and new varieties for economic development and social progress in Jiangsu Province.
There are 25 permanent research members in the lab, of which 9 research professors, 15 Ph.D. and 11 periodical research members. The total area of the lab is 850 m2 with more than 150 sets of large instruments.
In the past three years, 50 research projects have been undertaken, 200 papers have been published, two new varieties have been registered, two patents and one software copyright have been authorized. Meanwhile, one first prize, one second prize and two third prizes of Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Awards have been gained.

1. Investigation of regional plant germplasm resources, establishment of the virtual herbarium in East China;

3. Genetical improvement in the target characteristics of economic plant, and clone and utilization of the special useful genes;
4. Study on the taxonomy and systematic evolution of major plant families, mainly including Poaeceae, Umbelliferae and Dioscoreaceae.
